Manipur Violence: Two Injured In Attack By Armed Men In Imphal East

Security forces are trying to bring the situation under control.

IMPHAL-  Two village volunteers were injured after armed men launched an attack in Manipur’s Imphal East district on Monday evening, police said.

The injured have been shifted to a private hospital and at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) here, police added.

Heavy exchange of fire is ongoing between armed individuals at Pukhao Santipur in Imphal East district and the neighboring hill range, according to police reports.

Security forces are trying to bring the situation under control.

Pukhao, which shares the district boundary with Kangpokpi, has witnessed several incidents of gunfight since violence broke out in May last year.

The village shares the district boundary with Kangpokpi, an area that has emerged as one of the hotspots of instances of violence in the course of the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur.

The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur broke out between the state’s Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023.

The conflict has claimed at least 175 lives so far. The ethnic clashes erupted following a contentious verdict by the Manipur High Court regarding the grant of Scheduled Tribe status to Meitis.
