Bomb Blast at BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh’s Residence in Manipur, No Injuries

The explosion occurred around 1:30 a.m. at BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh’s residence in Konthoujam Mayai Leikai, causing minor damage but no injuries.

IMPHAL:  An unidentified group triggered a bomb blast at the private residence of BJP MLA Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh in Manipur’s Imphal West district in the early hours of Friday, causing minor damage but leaving no one injured.

The explosion occurred at around 1:30 a.m. at the MLA’s residence in Konthoujam Mayai Leikai. Sapam Ranjan Singh was reportedly present at the house when the blast occurred.

According to the MLA, the explosive detonated in the backyard of the residence, leaving a small crater on the ground and causing minor damage to the walls of the compound.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion and identify those responsible. Security arrangements in the area have also been reviewed following the incident.

Chief Minister condemns attack

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the MLA’s residence following the blast and strongly condemned the incident.

Describing the attack as a “senseless and barbaric” act against a people’s representative, the Chief Minister said violence against elected representatives was an attack on democracy.

“I strongly condemn such a senseless and barbaric attack on the residence of a people’s representative. This act of violence is an attack on our democracy and the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon,” Khemchand said.

He assured that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted.

MLA questions motive

Sapam Ranjan Singh, the BJP legislator from Konthoujam constituency and a former Health Minister, also condemned the incident.

The MLA questioned the motive behind the attack and expressed concern over the possibility of such violence putting ordinary civilians at risk, particularly when explosives are used in residential areas.

The incident also prompted a public response, with local women, including members of the Meira Paibis, staging a sit-in protest near the site.

The protesters condemned the blast and demanded that authorities identify the perpetrators and take stringent action against them.

Police have not attributed the incident to any specific group so far. The investigation is continuing.

The blast comes against the backdrop of continuing efforts by the Manipur government to restore normalcy in a state that has experienced prolonged ethnic tensions since 2023. The latest incident has again raised concerns over security and the use of violence in residential areas.

At this stage, the circumstances behind the attack, the identity of those responsible and the motive remain under investigation.
