The incident occurred amid heightened tensions in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region, where clashes linked to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections have recently taken place. Violence between tribal and non-tribal groups over the filing of nomination papers reportedly led to fatalities and widespread unrest in the region.
In response to the deteriorating situation, authorities imposed curfew in several districts and suspended mobile internet services in parts of the region to prevent the spread of misinformation and further mobilisation.
