Centre Approves ₹5,000 Crore PMAY Housing Package for Flood-Affected Assam
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan hands over approval for 3.8 lakh PMAY-G houses to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma; additional housing support and agricultural assistance also announced.
NEW DELHI- The Centre has approved 3.8 lakh new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for Assam, involving an investment of nearly ₹5,000 crore, as part of housing and rehabilitation support for families affected by floods in the state.
The approval was announced following a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Chouhan formally handed over the approval for 3.8 lakh new PMAY-G houses to the Assam Chief Minister. The Union Minister also assured that additional PMAY houses would be sanctioned for flood-affected areas to support early rehabilitation and rebuilding for families whose homes have been damaged by floods.

A significant part of the decision is the extension of the PMAY-G survey period by another 15 days. According to the Union Minister, the extension is intended to ensure that eligible flood-affected families are not left out of the housing assistance programme.
The Centre has also decided to extend PMAY benefits to eligible tea garden workers’ families through a digital survey after they receive land pattas. The move is aimed at expanding access to permanent housing among tea garden communities in Assam.
The meeting also covered the impact of the floods on agriculture and the need for additional support to affected farmers.

Action plans worth ₹832.70 crore under the Agriculture Unnati Yojana and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) have been approved for flood-affected farmers. The Centre has also approved ₹33.36 crore for agricultural mechanisation and ₹96.87 crore under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).
In addition, Chouhan handed over a sanction letter for ₹139 crore under RKVY to Assam to strengthen agricultural investment and promote sustainable farming.
Following the meeting, Chouhan said on X that the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stood with the people of Assam during the current crisis. He said the discussions covered flood damage, problems faced by farmers and rural development, while reiterating the Centre’s commitment to supporting the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Chouhan and the Union Government for according priority to Assam and taking what he described as swift decisions on assistance.
Sarma said the approval of 3.8 lakh PMAY-G houses, involving nearly ₹5,000 crore, would provide crucial support to families affected by the floods. He also welcomed the assurance of additional houses for flood-affected areas and further housing assistance for eligible tea garden communities.
The latest package combines housing rehabilitation with agricultural and rural development support, covering both immediate recovery needs and longer-term assistance for affected communities.
For flood-affected families, the extension of the PMAY-G survey by 15 days is particularly significant, as it provides additional time for eligible households to be identified and included in the housing assistance process.
