In Lucknow, students from Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalaya—widely referred to in media as “Gen Alpha”—have staged back-to-back protests this month demanding better teaching staff and school facilities, with videos of the demonstrations spreading rapidly online.

On  Monday, August 17, about 200–250 girls from the same school’s girls’ section staged a second demonstration amid heavy rain. They marched from the school, formed human chains, and blocked the Dubagga-Kanpur Bypass and Balaganj intersections, creating a jam stretching several kilometers. Videos circulating online captured them sitting on the road with towels over their heads against the rain, holding posters, and chanting slogans about teacher shortages—particularly the lack of physics and biology teachers (only a chemistry teacher was available for many science-stream students)—and the impact on board exam preparation.

Students also raised issues such as long morning assemblies reducing class time, limited extracurricular activities, school timings (reportedly 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), food quality, and demands related to the warden and internal management. One student, identified as Anamika, told reporters that board exams were approaching while studies remained affected.

Police from multiple stations and senior officials, including Principal Secretary Anurag Yadav of the Social Welfare Department, reached the spot. After discussions, the students were escorted back to the school premises where grievances were heard further. Traffic was restored and the situation returned to normal. Officials indicated the concerns would be examined and appropriate steps considered.

The protests form part of a wider pattern of student demonstrations at government schools in Uttar Pradesh over infrastructure and staffing. Viral clips of both Lucknow actions—showing uniformed Gen Alpha students blocking roads and engaging authorities—have drawn significant online attention, with many commenting on the younger generation’s assertiveness regarding educational rights. Authorities have emphasized peaceful resolution and ongoing efforts to address vacancies through guest faculty pending court outcomes.

Earlier, on Friday, August 14, 2026, male students from the government-run residential school in the Para area left the campus around 9 a.m., carrying posters and banners. They blocked Budheshwar-Mohan Road near the petrol pump, disrupting the route toward the Agra Expressway and causing a major traffic jam. Dressed in school uniforms, they raised slogans highlighting a shortage of subject teachers that was disrupting regular classes and exam preparation. Some reports also noted complaints about food quality and other amenities.

A video of the sit-in and slogan-chanting quickly went viral on social media, showing the young protesters holding their ground as police tried to clear the road. Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun (whose department oversees the school) was traveling to Kannauj when his convoy became stuck in the gridlock. He stepped out, spoke directly with the students, and accompanied them back to the school for roughly two hours of discussions with officials.

Arun later stated he was satisfied the students were seeking quality education rather than avoiding classes. He explained that a pending high court case had delayed some teacher postings and said the next hearing was set for August 17. He assured arrangements for guest lecturers and teachers would continue, and promised improvements to coaching under the Mukhyamantri Abhyudaya Yojana for competitive exams. Students called off the protest after the assurances.
