AASU Demands Senior Prosecutors for Zubeen Garg Case
The All Assam Students’ Union has urged the state government to constitute a special court and appoint senior prosecutors to ensure a fair and speedy trial.

GUWAHATI- The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Sunday wrote to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking the constitution of a special court and the appointment of a team of senior criminal lawyers as Special Public Prosecutors in the death case of noted singer Zubeen Garg.
In the letter, jointly signed by AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan, the students’ body described Garg’s death as one of the most painful tragedies Assam has witnessed in recent years. The organisation reiterated its longstanding demand for justice and accountability in the case.

AASU noted that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Assam government has completed its investigation and submitted a chargesheet before the court. According to the organisation, the chargesheet establishes that Garg was murdered, and judicial proceedings in the matter have already begun.
“AASU, along with the people of Assam, has consistently demanded justice for Zubeen Garg. The perpetrators must be punished,” the letter stated.

The students’ body also recalled that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had publicly assured on multiple occasions that justice would be delivered in the case and had announced that a Special Public Prosecutor would be appointed to assist the prosecution.
However, AASU expressed concern that during the ongoing hearings, all the accused persons have engaged senior and experienced defence lawyers. In this context, the organisation argued that the absence of an equally strong prosecution team could adversely affect the conduct of the trial.

“At this stage, Zubeen Garg’s case requires the appointment of a team of senior advocates with proven experience in criminal law as Special Public Prosecutors,” the letter said. It further emphasised the need for a special court to ensure that the trial is conducted in a time-bound manner.
AASU placed two specific demands before the state government. First, it urged the constitution of a special court to fast-track the judicial process, including by approaching the Gauhati High Court, if necessary. Second, it called for the immediate appointment of senior and experienced criminal lawyers as Special Public Prosecutors to conduct the prosecution on behalf of Zubeen Garg.
Reiterating the principle that justice delayed is justice denied, the students’ body urged the government to take prompt and decisive steps to strengthen the legal process and ensure that those found guilty are punished without undue delay.
