AIIMS Guwahati Becomes First ATLS Centre in Northeast
The accreditation positions AIIMS Guwahati as a regional hub for standardised trauma care training under globally recognised ATLS guidelines.

GUWAHATI – In a groundbreaking achievement for healthcare in the Northeast region, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati has been accredited as the first Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) provider centre in the area.
This milestone marks a significant advancement in standardized trauma care training and emergency response capabilities.
The accreditation, announced today, positions AIIMS Guwahati as a pioneer in disseminating structured trauma management principles across the Northeast. To commemorate the occasion, the institute successfully conducted its inaugural ATLS Provider Course from December 12 to 14, 2025.

The event was graced by Prof. (Dr.) M. C. Mishra, Chair of ATLS India and former Director of AIIMS New Delhi.
Each ATLS course at AIIMS Guwahati is designed for 16 delegates and includes a rigorous three-day program: two days of intensive hands-on and didactic sessions, followed by a formal assessment on the third day, adhering strictly to global ATLS guidelines. The program emphasizes critical intervention during the “golden hour” – the vital period immediately following trauma that greatly influences survival rates and patient outcomes.”
The accreditation signifies a major step forward in building trauma care capacity in the Northeast,” said Prof. (Col.) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati. “By ensuring sustained ATLS training, we aim to enhance emergency responses, improve patient outcomes, and reduce trauma-related mortality across the region.”
Established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), AIIMS Guwahati operates a 750-bed hospital and serves as an Institute of National Importance. This new ATLS capability builds on recent initiatives, including a CME-cum-workshop on quantitative PCR in molecular diagnostics held earlier in December.
The development is expected to have far-reaching impacts, equipping more healthcare professionals with advanced skills to handle the region’s high incidence of trauma cases, often linked to road accidents and geographical challenges. AIIMS Guwahati continues to expand its role as a leading medical education and care hub in Northeast India.
