Amit Shah Visits Assam, Inaugurates Lachit Borphukan Police Academy
Shah emphasized the transformation of Assam under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

GUWAHATI- During his Assam Visit, Union Home minister Amit Shah began his day in Dergaon, where he inaugurated the revamped first phase of the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy. This event marks a key highlight of his visit, showcasing the government’s investment in modernizing law enforcement training in Assam and the broader Northeast.
The academy, named after the legendary 17th-century Ahom general Lachit Borphukan—who famously repelled Mughal forces during the Battle of Saraighat—symbolizes a fusion of historical pride and contemporary security needs.
The first phase of the academy, completed at a cost of Rs 167.4 crore, features advanced facilities such as modern classrooms, a weapon simulator, a library, and other training infrastructure. These upgrades aim to equip police personnel with the skills needed to address the region’s unique challenges, including insurgency, border security, and law enforcement in diverse terrains.

During the ceremony, Shah also laid the foundation stone for the second phase of the project, estimated at Rs 425.48 crore. This next phase will include housing facilities for trainees and officers, further expanding the academy’s capacity to serve as a regional hub for police training.
In his address at the event, Shah emphasized the transformation of Assam under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

He contrasted the current administration’s achievements with the Congress era, stating that while Assam received Rs 1.27 lakh crore in devolution grants and central aid during 10 years of Congress rule, the Modi government had significantly increased funding, ushering in peace and development.
“Over 10,000 youths have laid down arms and joined the mainstream in Assam, with peace returning to the state during the last 10 years,” he said.
The Narendra Modi-led government will bring in Rs 3 lakh crore infrastructure projects in Assam in addition to the Rs 5 lakh crore proposed investment at a recent business summit in the state, Shah said.
The inauguration was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior state officials, and dignitaries, reinforcing the collaborative efforts between the central and state governments to bolster security and stability in the Northeast.
Amit Shah’s visit comes at a time when the BJP, which has governed Assam since 2016, is consolidating its political footing ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Shah’s critique of the Congress and his emphasis on increased central funding are strategic, aimed at highlighting the party’s achievements in bringing peace and progress to a region once marked by unrest.
