Assam CM and Union Minister of Jal Shakti Discuss Key Plans

NEW DELHI-  Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma held a productive meeting with the Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C.R. Paatil, in New Delhi. The discussion focused on critical water-related initiatives for Assam, including the rejuvenation of Silsako Beel and the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in the state.

The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between the Assam state government and the central government to address water management and rural water supply challenges.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to plans for rejuvenating Silsako Beel, a vital water body in Guwahati. The Assam government has prioritized restoring this wetland, which has faced issues such as encroachment, pollution, and reduced water retention capacity.

The rejuvenation project aims to enhance flood management, improve ecological balance, and ensure sustainable water availability in the region. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of this initiative, given Guwahati’s recurring flooding problems during the monsoon season.

They also reviewed the status of the Jal Jeevan Mission, a flagship program of the central government aimed at providing functional household tap connections (FHTCs) for safe drinking water to all rural households.

Assam has made notable progress under the scheme, with efforts ongoing to achieve 100% coverage. The discussion likely covered strategies to accelerate implementation, address logistical challenges in the state’s hilly and flood-prone areas, and ensure the quality and sustainability of water supply infrastructure.

The meeting comes at a time when Assam is focusing on sustainable development and infrastructure improvement.  Silsako Beel’s restoration aligns with broader environmental goals, while the Jal Jeevan Mission reflects the state’s commitment to improving public health and quality of life in rural areas.
