Meghalaya: Massive Fire Engulfs House of Son of Meghalaya’s First CM in Tura

The blaze, which erupted shortly before noon, caused extensive damage to the property, leaving the family and local community in shock.

TURA- A devastating fire broke out earlier today at the residence of Farsen Momin, son of Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister, Captain Williamson Sangma, in the Hawakhana locality of Tura. The blaze, which erupted shortly before noon, caused extensive damage to the property, leaving the family and local community in shock.

According to initial reports, the fire is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, though some sources suggest a coffee machine malfunction may have been the cause. The house, located within the compound of the ancestral home of Captain Williamson Sangma, a revered figure in Meghalaya’s history, was quickly engulfed in flames, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.

Firefighters from the Fire and Emergency Department rushed to the scene and battled the blaze for nearly an hour before bringing it under control. Despite their efforts, the residence suffered significant structural damage. No casualties have been reported, but the full extent of the loss is yet to be assessed.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as thick smoke billowed into the sky and flames consumed the building. “It happened so fast,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “We could see the fire spreading, and everyone was trying to help, but it was too intense.”

Farsen Momin, a former Member of the District Council (MDC) in Tura, was not available for comment at the time of reporting. The incident has drawn attention due to the historical significance of the property and its connection to Captain Williamson Sangma, who served as Meghalaya’s inaugural Chief Minister following the state’s formation in 1972.

Local officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. “We are looking into all possibilities, including electrical faults,” said a spokesperson from the Tura Fire and Emergency Services. “A detailed report will be prepared once the investigation is complete.”
