Assam: Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption in action against illegal gratification

Based on an FIR regarding demand for illegal gratification by Insp. Upendra Nath Sarma, OC Tamulpur PS of Baksa District, a team of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Assam, Guwahati, led by a DSP rank officer, laid a trap at the PS premises. The complainant is a lady.
The suspect officer had demanded 5 lacs as illegal gratification for releasing a DI Pick-up Vehicle, which the local police had seized from the belonging to the husband of the complainant.
The husband of the complainant, Pankaj Kalita, had been arrested in a murder case in the first week of March. Around the same time, the local police had also seized a vehicle belonging to the said arrested person and husband of complainant.
Today the complainant and her mother in-law proceeded to ps with trap amount of ₹ 1 lac to PS compound , as directed by the OC over phone and the accused officer deputed one home guard, Hafiz Ali, to collect the money of 1 lac from the complainant.
The home guard accepted the amount in the Barrack where the home guard lived, in the police station compound itself.
However the Home guard on counting the money grew suspicious and getting suspicious, returned back the money to the complainant and asked them to come other day.
On being alerted the Trap team and the witnesses entered the PS compound but the Home guard had quickly absconded.
The Trap team is carrying out further investigation at the Tamulpur PS compound and the Home guard is found to be absconding. The seized vehicle is found lying in the compound of the PS and has been seized in connection with the ACB PS case registered in this connection.
This refers to ACB PS case no. 14/2018 u/s 7/13(1)d/13(2)of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Insp Upendra Nath Sarma, OC Tamulpur ps is named accused in the FIR. Investigation is continuing. Formalities are being conduted including search of the house of the accused officers.
In another parallel operation today, based on an FIR regarding demand for illegal gratification of ₹ 10,000/- by an employee of Income Tax office under North Lakhimpur PS, a team of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption, and Lakhimpur Police in a joint operation, led by a DSP rank officer , have caught Smt Janmoni Bhuyan Sharma alias Rupali Das, red handed while accepting bribe from the complainant, Tanmoy Dutta.
She was caught accepting a amount of Rs 5,000/- at about 11:35 in the office building of the Income Tax officer in lakhimpur town.
The accused by misusing her official position had demanded bribe to get the work done regarding a exemption certificate needed for the complainant friend Tomnya Geyi .
Today at around 1:00 PM she was arrested for having accepting Rs 5000/-as advance money from the complainant .
This refers to ACB PS c/n 13/2018 u/s 7/13 (1)(d) /13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
During arrest and house search of accused, all legal formalities were observed. The role of other senior officers is being investigated..She is being brought to Guwahati for production before the Special Court, Assam.
