Assam: Endemic Bird Day 2025 Celebrated with Conservation Walk in Garbhanga Forest

The event was conducted under Aaranyak’s WeForNature initiative and brought together 24 enthusiastic birders, researchers, and conservationists.

GUWAHATI-  Marking Endemic Bird Day 2025, biodiversity conservation NGO Aaranyak, in collaboration with the Kamrup East Division of the Assam Forest Department, hosted a vibrant nature awareness programme on May 10 at the Garbhanga Reserve Forest, near Guwahati.

The event was conducted under Aaranyak’s WeForNature initiative and brought together 24 enthusiastic birders, researchers, and conservationists.

The day-long celebration began with a guided birdwatching trail from the Lokhara entry point. Participants spotted and documented 22 bird species in their natural habitat, showcasing the avian richness of Garbhanga’s subtropical forests.

The trail was followed by an interactive discussion session titled “Conservation Adda”, which encouraged informal yet insightful conversations on bird endemicity, conservation strategies, and the role of citizen science in protecting Northeast India’s avifaunal diversity.

The Northeast, a part of the Himalayan and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots, is home to several endemic and globally significant bird species like the Mishmi Wren-Babbler, Manipur Bush Quail, and Bengal Florican, all under threat from habitat degradation and climate change.

Leading the event were Dr Jayaditya Purkayastha, noted conservation biologist, and Dr Nilotpal Mahanta, wildlife biologist and experienced birder.

The Aaranyak team included Partha Pratim Das, Simanta Medhi, Pitom Jyoti Gore, Chinmoy Swargiary, and Pranab Goswami, who smoothly coordinated the programme.

The event served as a platform to inspire awareness, foster collaboration, and highlight the importance of preserving the region’s endemic bird species through active community involvement and scientific documentation.
