Sikkim: Indian Railways Approves Survey for Melli–Dentam Railway Line

₹2.25 Cr sanctioned for Final Location Survey of strategic railway link via Jorethang and Legship, extending benefits to southern and western Sikkim

GANGTOK- In a significant move towards enhancing connectivity in the northeastern region, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for a new Melli–Dentam railway line in Sikkim. The project, to be undertaken by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), is approved at an estimated cost of ₹2.25 crore.

The survey, covering the proposed alignment from Melli to Dentam via Jorethang and Legship, aims to bridge a crucial infrastructure gap in southern and western Sikkim.

This development comes in response to a long-standing demand raised by Dr. Indra Hang Subba, MP (Lok Sabha) from Sikkim, and sanctioned under the guidance of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Once completed, the line will serve as a strategic extension of the under-construction Sivok–Rangpo railway, currently expected to be operational by 2027.

With a tentative length of 75 km, the Melli–Dentam route is envisioned to enhance economic activity, boost tourism, and improve mobility for people and goods in Gyalshing, Dentam, and surrounding areas near the Indo-Nepal border.

Officials emphasized that the FLS will determine the technical feasibility, alignment, and cost estimation, setting the foundation for this vital rail infrastructure. Tendering for survey work is expected to commence soon.

This ambitious project is anticipated to transform the socio-economic landscape of West Sikkim, offering long-term benefits through enhanced access, trade facilitation, and job creation.
