Assam Launches Statewide Crackdown on Beef Sale: 133 Detained, Over 1 Tonne Seized

The operation, described as one of the largest of its kind in Assam, saw police teams raid over 189 hotels, restaurants, and other establishments across multiple districts.

GUWAHATI-  In a massive statewide operation on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Assam Police conducted extensive raids targeting the illegal sale and distribution of beef, resulting in the apprehension of at least 133 individuals and the seizure of approximately 1,500 kilograms of suspected beef.

The operation, described as one of the largest of its kind in Assam, saw police teams raid over 189 hotels, restaurants, and other establishments across multiple districts, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Cachar, Charaideo, South Kamrup, Darrang, Hojai, and Morigaon.

According to a senior police officer, the drive was initiated suo motu to curb reported incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and unauthorized beef sales in eateries. “The main intention of the drive is to stop violations of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act,”  the officer told reporters.

In Dibrugarh, the largest town in eastern Assam, police arrested three individuals and seized 20 kilograms of beef, including 15 kilograms of raw meat and 5 kilograms of cooked meat. Dibrugarh’s in-charge Superintendent of Police, Shantanu Dutta, confirmed that three hotels were sealed, and cases were filed against their owners for violating the Act. Dutta emphasized that such operations would continue with strict vigilance.

In Cachar district, police conducted simultaneous operations in six areas, arresting eight individuals and seizing 24.5 kilograms of suspected beef. Six establishments were sealed, and the seized meat was sent for verification by the veterinary department. Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta issued a stern warning, stating, “The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, clearly bans the sale and transport of beef. Cachar Police will continue to take stringent measures against violators.”

In Nagaon district, 16 people were apprehended after raids on 15 eateries, while in Guwahati, six individuals were detained in the Jalukbari area, with 72 kilograms of beef seized from the Kotahbari area alone. Similar operations were reported in Kokrajhar, where four hotels were searched, and in other districts like Hailakandi and Darrang.

The crackdown, carried out under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, aimed to enforce strict regulations prohibiting cattle slaughter and beef sales in areas predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities, as well as within a 5-kilometer radius of temples and Vaishnavite monasteries (satras).
