Assam: Man Allegedly Throws Acid on Wife and Daughter in Bongaigaon on International Women’s Day

The brutal attack has left both victims critically injured and sparked widespread outrage.

BONGAIGAON-  In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through Assam, a man allegedly threw acid on his wife’s face and injured his daughter during a domestic dispute in Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon district, on March 8, 2025—coinciding with International Women’s Day. The brutal attack has left both victims critically injured and sparked widespread outrage.

Police reports indicate that the assailant, a local resident, attacked his wife following an argument at their home around 7:30 PM. In a fit of rage, he reportedly doused her with acid, severely burning her face and upper body. The couple’s young daughter, who tried to stop the assault, was also splashed with the corrosive substance, sustaining burns to her arms and face.

Neighbors, alerted by the victims’ cries, contacted the Assam Police, who arrested the suspect later that night after a brief search. The victims were immediately taken to a hospital, where they remain in critical condition. “The injuries are severe, particularly to the mother. We are doing everything possible to stabilize them,” a hospital spokesperson said.

The Assam Police have launched an investigation, charging the man with attempted murder and grievous assault. Early findings suggest the attack was premeditated, with the acid possibly procured locally. Authorities are probing the circumstances leading to the incident, which has reignited debates over the regulation of acid sales in the state.

This incident follows a pattern of acid-related violence in Assam, including a January 2025 case in Cachar where a woman was similarly assaulted. As the community rallies in support of the victims, the focus now shifts to ensuring accountability and preventing future tragedies.
