Assam: PM Modi Pays Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika on 100th Birth Anniversary, Calls Him Voice of India’s Unity
Modi recalled how Hazarika sang for unity even during times of violence and neglect in the region, calling him a “champion of harmony and cultural pride.”

GUWAHATI- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati, Assam, describing him as a “voice of unity” whose music continues to inspire generations.
“Bhupen Da’s entire life was dedicated to music and to the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. His immortal songs united India, gave voice to the common man, and reflected India’s cultural diversity,” the PM said, adding that conferring the Bharat Ratna on Hazarika reflected the government’s commitment to honouring the pride of the Northeast.

The Prime Minister highlighted Hazarika’s deep connect with the Brahmaputra and the Ganga, his travels across India and the world, and his decision to remain rooted in Assam. Modi recalled how Hazarika sang for unity even during times of violence and neglect in the region, calling him a “champion of harmony and cultural pride.”

Emphasising the importance of cultural connectivity alongside physical infrastructure, Modi noted that Hazarika’s centenary was being celebrated nationally through music, biography releases, and public events. “Bhupen Da’s vision of a prosperous Northeast is being realised through rapid infrastructure development, women’s empowerment, and the promotion of local heritage,” he said.

PM Modi urged the people of Assam to become “brand ambassadors of Vocal for Local,” adding that Assam’s products, culture, cuisine, and traditions must reach the global stage. “The dream of a developed India by 2047 will be strengthened by the inspiration of Bhupen Da’s songs and ideals,” he concluded.
The event was attended by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries.
