Assam Police Search Congress Leader Pawan Khera’s Home in Delhi

A search by Assam Police at Congress leader Pawan Khera’s Delhi residence has intensified political tensions, with both BJP and Congress trading sharp allegations.

DELHI / GUWAHATI — Tensions between the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reached a fever pitch on Tuesday as an Assam Police team conducted a high-stakes search at the New Delhi residence of Pawan Khera, Chairman of the Congress Media and Publicity Department.

The Raid in Delhi

Early on April 7, 2026, officials from the Assam Police arrived at Khera’s home in the capital. While Khera himself was not present—reportedly traveling to Hyderabad for party engagements—police confirmed the seizure of several electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones .

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to claim that “incriminating material” was recovered during the search. He further took a swipe at the Congress leader, alleging that Khera had “run away” to Telangana to evade the investigation

The “Passport Row” Explained

The police action stems from a defamation and criminal conspiracy FIR filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of the Assam CM. The legal battle centers on explosive allegations made by Khera during a recent press conference:

Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds three separate passports from India, the UAE, and Egypt/Antigua and Barbuda.

He further claimed the existence of undisclosed overseas assets belonging to the CM’s family, calling for a federal probe into “dual-citizenship and financial irregularities” .

The Chief Minister and his wife have vehemently denied these claims, labeling them “fabricated” and a “malicious attempt” to tarnish their reputation.

Congress Hits Back

The Congress party has slammed the raid as “political vendetta” and “intimidation tactics.” Senior leaders argued that using state police forces to cross state lines over a defamation case is an overreach of power.

“This is nothing but an attempt to silence those who ask questions about the wealth of the ruling family in Assam,” a Congress spokesperson stated in New Delhi.

Current Status

As of Tuesday evening, the Assam Police have not issued an arrest warrant but have summoned Khera for questioning. Khera, speaking from Hyderabad, maintained that he has “full faith in the judiciary” and will continue to raise issues of public interest.
