Assam: Rahul Gandhi Accuses Assam CM of Corruption, Himanta Biswa Sarma Hits Back in Heated Political Clash
Addressing a charged crowd, Gandhi accused Sarma of behaving like a "raja" (king) rather than a democratically elected leader, alleging widespread corruption and land theft benefiting corporate giants.

GUWAHATI– Congress Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a public meeting in Chaygaon, near Guwahati, today, labeling him as “India’s most corrupt Chief Minister.”
The remarks, made during a day-long visit to Assam alongside Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, have sparked a fierce war of words ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Addressing a charged crowd, Gandhi accused Sarma of behaving like a “raja” (king) rather than a democratically elected leader, alleging widespread corruption and land theft benefiting corporate giants.

“The Assam CM thinks he is a king, but the people of Assam will send him to jail for his corruption. Neither Modi nor Shah can save him,” Gandhi declared, emphasizing that the Congress’s “brave lions” would hold Sarma accountable.
He further alleged that the BJP, in collusion with the Election Commission, manipulated voter lists in Maharashtra and is attempting similar tactics in Assam and Bihar to influence elections. Gandhi also criticized the media for favoring corporate interests and top BJP leaders over the truth.

In a sharp rebuttal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X to dismiss Gandhi’s remarks, pointing out the Congress leader’s own legal troubles. Quoting Gandhi’s alleged statement from a closed-door Congress meeting—“Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail”—Sarma retorted, “He came all the way to Assam just to say this, conveniently forgetting that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases registered across the country. My best wishes to you, Rahul ji. Enjoy the hospitality of Assam for the rest of the day.”

Gandhi’s visit, aimed at galvanizing Congress workers for the upcoming polls, included meetings with state party leaders and tribal communities facing displacement and harassment. He framed the political contest as an ideological battle between the RSS’s “hatred and violence” and Congress’s “truth and non-violence,” urging supporters to remain vigilant against electoral manipulations.
Sarma, a former Congress leader who joined the BJP in 2015, accused Gandhi of using provocative language and dismissed the significance of his visit. The Assam CM’s sharp response underscores the intensifying political rivalry in the state, with both leaders leveraging the public spat to rally their respective bases.
