Assamese Music Maestro Bhupen Uzir Passes Away

Bhupen Uzir is survived by his wife, Shanta Uzir, and two daughters.

GUWAHATI-   A prominent music director from Assam, Bhupen Uzir, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80 in Guwahati. As per sources, the singer was having several health issues, following which he was hospitalised and breathed his last on January 9.

Bhupen Uzir is survived by his wife, Shanta Uzir, and two daughters. The last rites will be performed at Navagraha crematorium after paying the last respects to the mortal body at his residence today.

“Jeevan Surabhi” was Bhupen Uzir’s first film as a music director. He has directed music for almost 20 Assamese feature films.

Uzir also worked for the Food Corporation of India (FCI), but he left to pursue his musical interests. He later opened his own auditech studio in the city.

Along with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, many other personalities from the Assamese film industry condoled for the departed soul.

Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, used the digital platform X to express his deep sadness at the death of Bhupen Uzir, a well-known musician from Assam.

The Chief Minister recognized Uzir’s important role in shaping Assamese music and lamented that this loss was devastating for cultural enthusiasts.

He sympathized with the grieving family and supporters, acknowledging that the entire Assamese music industry is struggling to cope with this significant loss of a great artist who persevered despite health obstacles to contribute timeless musical pieces that enriched their cultural heritage.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Saddened by the passing away of renowned musician Bhupen Uzir, who has enriched the Assamese music world with unique talent and creativity. His passing away is an irreparable loss to the cultural world of Assam. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and the numerous admirers.”

“Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of eminent musician Bhupen Uzir, whose soulful and melodious music contributed immensely to Assamese music and cinema. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family members in this hour of grief and immense loss. May the departed soul attain Sadgati,” tweeted state minister Ashok Singhal.
