Cold, Dense Fog Grip Guwahati as Assam Sees Winter Chill
Minimum temperatures in Guwahati have dropped to 9–12°C, with dense early-morning fog affecting visibility, traffic movement and public health across several Assam districts.
GUWAHATI- Cold weather conditions continue across Assam, with Guwahati witnessing chilly nights and dense fog during early morning hours, leading to reduced visibility and slower movement on city roads.
Meteorological observations indicate that minimum temperatures in Guwahati have fallen below normal, settling in the range of 9°C to 12°C over the past few days. Dense fog has been reported mainly between late night and early morning, particularly in low-lying areas and along the Brahmaputra riverbank, affecting visibility on arterial roads, flyovers and highways connecting the city to nearby districts.

Morning commuters reported delays as fog reduced visibility in several parts of the city, prompting advisories for motorists to use fog lights and maintain safe speeds. Similar cold and foggy conditions have been recorded in other parts of Assam, including Morigaon, Nagaon, Barpeta, Jorhat and Dibrugarh, under largely dry weather conditions.
Meteorologists attribute the prevailing cold to stable winter atmospheric conditions, marked by clear skies at night, calm winds and radiational cooling, which causes sharper drops in night temperatures. No significant rainfall is forecast across Assam in the immediate period.

Health officials have advised elderly persons, children and those with respiratory ailments to take precautions against prolonged exposure to cold and fog. Farmers have also been urged to remain alert to falling night temperatures that may affect sensitive crops.
Cold and foggy conditions are expected to persist for the next few days, with visibility improving only after mid-morning hours.
