Darjeeling Toy Train Crosses Rs 25 Crore Revenue Mark

GUWAHATI-  The Northeast Frontier Railway has reported a notable increase in passenger traffic and revenue for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway during the financial year 2025–26.

According to official data, passenger footfall on the heritage railway rose to approximately 2.15 lakh during the year, while total earnings exceeded ₹25 crore. This marks an increase of around 17.72% in passenger traffic and 14.71% in revenue compared to the previous financial year.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway continues to attract domestic and international tourists. Known for its scenic routes through the Darjeeling hills and its historic narrow-gauge operations, the railway remains a significant contributor to regional tourism.

Officials attributed the growth to a series of passenger-focused initiatives and tourism-oriented measures undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway. These include curated travel experiences, service improvements, and enhanced engagement with stakeholders in the tourism sector.

The railway’s increasing popularity has also had a broader economic impact, supporting local livelihoods and boosting tourism-related activities in the Darjeeling region.

Experts note that heritage railways such as the DHR play a dual role — preserving historical infrastructure while also serving as key tourism assets. Sustained growth in passenger numbers indicates continued interest in heritage travel experiences.

The Northeast Frontier Railway stated that it remains committed to maintaining the historical integrity of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway while further improving passenger amenities and service quality.
