Former Mizoram Ranji Cricketer Dies on Field

Former Mizoram Ranji Trophy player K. Lalremruata collapsed during a local tournament match in Aizawl and died hours later, prompting grief across the state’s cricket community.

AIZAWL— Former Mizoram Ranji Trophy cricketer K. Lalremruata died on Thursday after collapsing during a local cricket match in Aizawl, officials confirmed. The 38-year-old suffered a medical emergency on the field during the second division screening game of the Khaled Memorial tournament at Suaka Cricket Ground near Sairang railway station.

Lalremruata was representing the Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club at the time of the incident. According to the Cricket Association Mizoram (CAM), he suffered a stroke and was pronounced dead several hours later despite efforts to provide immediate medical attention.

A native of Maubawk near Aizawl, Lalremruata had an active domestic career, representing Mizoram twice in the Ranji Trophy and featuring seven times in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Beyond his state appearances, he played for several local clubs and was regarded as an experienced figure in Mizoram’s cricket circuit.

The CAM issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to his family and highlighting the impact of his contributions to the sport at both state and grassroots levels. Mizoram’s Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar publicly mourned the cricketer’s passing, acknowledging the void his death has left within the local sporting fraternity.

Lalremruata’s sudden death has reignited discussions on player health and emergency response protocols during amateur and local sports events. Officials and peers have urged a review of medical preparedness at such tournaments to better manage on-field health crises. The cricket community in Mizoram is expected to hold tributes in the coming days.
