GUWAHATI– The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an extended weather forecast predicting light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers across Assam and other northeastern states until September 2, 2025.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has advised residents, particularly in flood-prone and landslide-susceptible areas, to remain vigilant due to the potential for localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to daily activities.

According to the IMD, the ongoing monsoon activity in Northeast India is driven by a combination of meteorological factors, including a monsoon trough extending from northwest India to the northeast Bay of Bengal and a weakened cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam. These conditions are expected to sustain wet weather across the region for the next several days. The detailed forecast for Assam and neighboring states is as follows: –

ASSAM-  Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated at many places, with isolated heavy showers likely in districts such as Dhemaji, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, and Hailakandi. Guwahati, the state’s capital, is expected to experience intermittent showers, which could exacerbate artificial flooding in low-lying areas like Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, and Rukminigaon. The IMD has noted that temperatures in Assam may remain 3–5°C above normal, contributing to hot and humid conditions between rain spells.

MEGHALAYA- Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast, with isolated very heavy showers possible, particularly on August 30 and 31. Areas like Mawsynram and Sohra, known for their high rainfall, are likely to see significant precipitation, raising concerns about landslides in hilly regions.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH–  Scattered light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers is expected, especially in higher-altitude areas. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in isolated pockets. – **

NAGALAND, MANIPUR, MIZORAM, AND TRIPURA- These states are forecast to experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy showers possible, particularly in Nagaland and Mizoram. Tripura may see lighter precipitation compared to other states but is not immune to thunderstorms.

Recent Weather Observations In the past 24 hours, several areas in Assam recorded significant rainfall, contributing to the ongoing wet spell. Notable rainfall measurements include: – Algapur (Hailakandi): 19 cm – AP Ghat (Cachar): 18 cm – Silchar (Cachar): 14 cm – Karimganj (Sribhumi): 11 cm – Aie NH Xing (Bongaigaon): 10 cm.

These figures indicate the intensity of recent rainfall, particularly in southern and eastern Assam, where waterlogging has been reported in urban centers. Guwahati, despite a brief respite from high temperatures following an afternoon shower on August 27, continues to grapple with artificial flooding due to inadequate drainage systems.

Temperature Trends In addition to rainfall, the IMD has noted that maximum temperatures in Assam are likely to remain above normal, ranging from 3–5°C higher than average. On August 27, Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6°C, while Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and North Lakhimpur reported 28.4°C, 30°C, and 30.4°C, respectively. These elevated temperatures, combined with high humidity, may create uncomfortable conditions, particularly in urban areas.
