The 24 hours general strike called by Manipur People’s Against Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 (MANPAC), affected normal life in all over state.
Markets in almost every town wore a deserted looks during the bandh, Government offices, banks and schools also remained closed for the day. There was no movement of passenger vehicles but some personal vehicles were seen commuting despite restriction from the bandh supporters.
There have been no major report of any unwanted incidents and damages during the bandh. However in Thoubal bandh supporters took out the protest to the street. According to police sources, two protesters were detained by the police personnel at Thoubal Thongkhong but were released later.
Protesters also organised sit-in protests at different places of demanding the withdrawal of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 at the earliest. During the protests demonstration, several slogans like “CAB should not be implemented”, “Communal politics of BJP is condemnable”, were raised.
However, the Indo-Myanmar Friendship Gate No 1 and 2 stayed open and business was as usual at Nanphalong bazar which saw low attendance. Moreh police beefed up security measures to prevent unwanted incidents during the general strike.
