Manipur: Armed Miscreants Fire at MLA’s residence in Churachandpur

Manipur police stated that the armed assailants took advantage of the darkness and fled the scene before they could be caught or identified.

IMPHAL-    A few unknown armed miscreants in Churachandpur reportedly fired several rounds at the residence of Kuki MLA Chinlunthang Manlu of Singhat (ST) assembly constituency, in Churachandpur district. The incident occurred on Thursday.

According to media reports, police stated that incident occurred in the early hours of July 4 at around 12:50 am. The police also stated that the assailants took advantage of the darkness and fled the scene before they could be caught or identified.

Following the incident, a police team reached the spot and recovered five empty cases of AK-47 catridges. During inspection, some portions of the wall were also found damaged due to the firing, the report added.

No casualties were reported during the attack by the miscreants. Police have registered a case in connection with the incident at Churachandpur police station to carry out further probe.

Chinlungthang, had contested the 2017 Manipur Assembly elections under the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, in the 2022 Assembly polls, he contested under the Kuki Peoples Alliance and won the Singhat seat, which comes under Churachandpur assembly constituency.

The district’s Zenhang Lamka Village Authority issued a joint press statement today, stressing that such incidents should not be repeated in future. The authority emphasised that these incidents will not be tolerated.

In another similar incident, the Indigenous Tribal Forum issued a statement saying that unknown armed miscreants broke out into the residence of ITLF secretary Muan Tombing with firearms on Wednesday night at around 8:40 pm, the HT report noted.

Armed miscreants had also reportedly kidnapped the president of YPA, a local Kuki body, in Churachandpur on Wednesday.

The same group of armed assailants also fired at the Singhat MLA’s residence and also near the Vaiphei People’s Council president’s residence, ITLF claimed.

ITLF, while strongly condemning these actions, appealed Manipur police and Assam Rifles to take necessary precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents that disrupt the town’s peace and cause panic and terror amongst locals.
