Manipur: Fresh violence reported in Imphal

IMPHAL- Tension prevailed in Manipur’s capital Imphal on Monday after fresh violence and clashes broke out again. The Army and the paramilitary forces have been rushed in to control the situation
On Monday morning, at around 10.30 am, a ruckus broke out at the New Checkon Bazaar area in Imphal East district over space in the market. Clashes followed and at around 2 pm, the houses were set on fire by a mob. The police have arrested 3 individuals over their alleged involvement in the incident.

Following the arson, the state government has shortened the curfew relaxation which now ranges from 6 am to 2 pm. Earlier, the curfew was relaxed from 6 am to 4 pm.
Authorities also extended the ban on internet services for five more days citing reports of continued “incidents like arson of houses and premises”.

“There is apprehension that anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussion for the law-and-order situation in the state of Manipur,” the order read.
Meanwhile, the official death toll in the violence that has engulfed Manipur for weeks now stands at 74.
