Manipur: Miscreant killed after security forces opened fire to thwart ‘looting’ of police armoury

A security force jawan also suffered injuries.

IMPHAL-   A miscreant was killed on Tuesday after security forces opened fire at a mob that was allegedly trying to loot a police armoury in Thoubal district of restive Manipur, officials said. A security force jawan also suffered injuries, they said.

Later, the personnel of the anti-riot Rapid Action Force (RAF) conducted a flag march in the area to restore peace.The Thoubal district is about 24 kms from state capital Imphal.

The Army and central police forces have been deployed to bring peace in the northeastern state where ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities has continued for two months, leaving over 100 people dead, many injured and a large number of houses and places of worship gutted.

 Meanwhile, After two months of closure in the wake of violence, schools in Manipur are set to reopen on July 5. As per the announcement made by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, schools will initially be opened for classes 1 to 8.

According to official data from the Education Department, there are approximately 11,967 displaced students from classes 1 to 8 stationed in relief camps across different districts of Manipur, including both hills and valleys.

The Chief Minister has stated that the reopening of schools for classes 9 to 12 will be considered once the displaced families are shifted to pre-fabricated houses. In this regard, the Education Minister has held a meeting with six student bodies.
