Manipur: Two Hand Grenades Found Near Palace Compound, FIR Registered

The grenades, found without detonators, were safely removed, averting a potential disaster.

IMPHAL-  A tense situation unfolded in Manipur’s capital today as two high-explosive hand grenades were discovered near the Bal Vidya Mandir school within the Palace Compound in Imphal East, just 50 meters from the residence of Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba and the revered Shree Shree Govindajee temple.

The incident, reported at approximately 9:30 AM, prompted swift action from security forces, raising fresh concerns amid the state’s ongoing security challenges. Personnel from the B/66 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) spotted the grenades during a routine patrol near the school’s main gate.

A Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), supported by the Imphal East district police, was immediately deployed to the site. The grenades, found without detonators, were safely removed, averting a potential disaster.

Authorities confirmed the devices were incapable of being triggered in their current state but underscored the gravity of the find due to its proximity to sensitive locations.

An FIR has been registered at Porompat police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the motive and perpetrators behind the incident.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility, leaving security agencies on high alert.

This discovery comes amid heightened tensions in Manipur, where ethnic conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have claimed over 258 lives since May 2023 and displaced thousands.

Recent security operations have recovered significant caches of weapons, including 114 firearms and explosives in a single day, highlighting the state’s volatile situation.

The Palace Compound, a historically and culturally significant area, houses key landmarks, making the incident particularly alarming. Local residents expressed shock, with one stating, “This is too close to home. We need answers and stronger security.”

The state government, already grappling with flood relief and ethnic reconciliation efforts, faces mounting pressure to address such security threats.

On August 31, 2025, internet and mobile data services were suspended in five valley districts, including Imphal East, citing law and order concerns.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as investigations continue. The incident underscores the fragile security environment in Manipur, with calls for peace talks and stronger governance growing louder.
