Mizoram: Aizawl Gets Connected to the Railway Network After CRS Authorization

AIZAWL– In a historic development, Mizoram’s capital city, Aizawl, is now officially connected to the national railway network following the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) authorization of the Broad Gauge (BG) line between Hortoki and Sairang.
This final 33.864 km stretch completes the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang New Line Railway Project, marking a significant infrastructure milestone for the northeastern state.
The inspection, led by Sumeet Singhal, CRS (Northeast Frontier Circle), was carried out between 6th and 10th June 2025 through motor trolley, foot patrol, and a speed trial using a diesel-hauled inspection train.

This development brings direct train access to Aizawl for the first time, fulfilling a long-standing dream of the people of Mizoram.
The route passes through rugged hilly terrain and comprises 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges. The CRS has authorized passenger and goods movement at a maximum speed of 90 kmph on the main line.

The entire Bairabi–Sairang project is a remarkable engineering feat, featuring 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, 5 road over bridges, and 6 road under bridges.
The total tunnel length stands at 12,853 meters, and Bridge No. 196, at 104 meters tall, rises 42 meters higher than the Qutub Minar.
This rail connectivity is expected to enhance regional mobility, boost trade, and unlock socio-economic opportunities for Mizoram, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to strengthening connectivity in remote and strategically important regions.
