Mizoram: Assam Rifles Seize M4 Rifle and Ammunition in Mizoram Border Operation

CHAMPHAI– In a significant blow to arms smuggling along the Indo-Myanmar border, the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Mizoram Police, recovered a sophisticated M4 assault rifle and ammunition in Champhai district on Monday.
The operation, conducted in a village near the border, also led to the arrest of one individual suspected of involvement in cross-border arms trafficking.
Acting on specific intelligence, Assam Rifles personnel cordoned off a suspected house in the early hours of September 22, 2025.

A thorough search uncovered the M4 rifle, complete with a magazine, along with several rounds of 5.56mm ammunition. The seized items, identified as war-like stores, were handed over to the local police for further investigation and legal action.
The arrested individual is currently under interrogation to uncover potential links to larger smuggling networks operating from Myanmar’s Chin State.

This recovery marks the latest in a series of successful operations by the Assam Rifles in Mizoram, a state increasingly identified as a transit route for illicit arms and narcotics.
Just days ago, on September 19, a similar operation in Saikhumpai village yielded a cache of weapons, including a Heckler & Koch G3 rifle, a Springfield sniper rifle, and grenades.
Authorities believe these efforts are disrupting the supply lines of insurgent groups and smuggling syndicates exploiting the porous 1,643-km Indo-Myanmar border.

“The Assam Rifles remain committed to securing our borders and preventing the flow of illegal arms that threaten regional stability,” said an official spokesperson.
The operation underscores the force’s proactive role in maintaining security in Northeast India, particularly in Mizoram, where the Tiau River serves as a natural boundary with Myanmar.
Further details on the suspect and potential connections to cross-border networks are awaited as investigations continue. The Assam Rifles have urged local communities to report suspicious activities to aid in curbing smuggling in the region.
