Nagaland: Massive Jungle Fire Breaks Out Near Naga Heritage Village, Kisama

Efforts to douse the fire continue as officials and local volunteers monitor the situation.

Kohima-  A massive jungle fire erupted near Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, on Thursday evening, triggering concerns over environmental damage. Locals reported spotting high-rise smoke around 4:00 PM, suggesting the fire started above the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) viewpoint, near jhum fields before Rhododendron Resort.

According to an official from the Fire Station, South Kohima, the fire was advancing uphill as of 7:30 PM. While no casualties or property loss have been reported, the blaze poses a severe threat to the forest and biodiversity.

A fire tender, six fire department personnel, and volunteers from nearby villages—including Phesama and Kigwema—were deployed to contain the fire. However, efforts were hindered as the fire spread beyond accessible roads.

The cause remains unconfirmed, though it is suspected that dry, windy conditions may have intensified an uncontrolled jungle burn. Local authorities have previously imposed a blanket ban on jungle burning, enforcing penalties under existing laws.

Efforts to douse the fire continue as officials and local volunteers monitor the situation.
