The newly completed terminal, spread over nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, has been designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually. The project is supported by major upgrades to runway, airfield systems, aprons and taxiways, marking a significant expansion of Assam’s aviation infrastructure.
Billed as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, the facility draws inspiration from Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids.” The design incorporates approximately 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo from the Northeast, along with Kaziranga-inspired green landscaping, japi motifs, the one-horned rhinoceros symbol, and 57 columns inspired by the Kopou orchid. A key feature of the terminal is the “Sky Forest,” an indoor green space housing nearly one lakh indigenous plants.
