Priyanka Gandhi Ramps Up Congress Campaign in Assam, Accuses BJP of ‘Double Ghulami’ and Forcing Women to Attend Rallies
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra campaigns in Upper Assam, accusing BJP of coercion and raising issues of tea workers, women, and governance.

GUWAHATI- Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a sharp and aggressive election campaign in Upper Assam today, addressing three public rallies in a single day as the party intensifies its fight against the ruling BJP ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Priyanka arrived in Dibrugarh and travelled by road to Nazira in Sivasagar district, where she addressed her first major rally in support of senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia.
In a fiery speech, she accused the BJP government of running a “double-ghulami (double slavery) government” and alleged that welfare schemes meant for women are being misused to pressure beneficiaries into attending rallies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

She claimed that women are being told to attend BJP programmes or risk having their names removed from beneficiary lists, thereby curbing freedom of speech and expression.
Priyanka described the current dispensation as a “corrupt government” that works only when it gets political benefit and creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
She further highlighted issues like low wages for tea garden workers, delay in granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to certain communities, and rising fuel prices, positioning the Congress as a party that wants a government “which does not threaten and intimidate the people.”

Following the Nazira rally, Priyanka proceeded to Tingkhong (Dibrugarh district), where she campaigned for Congress candidate Bipul Gogoi.
In the evening, she addressed her third rally in Khowang, campaigning for Lurinjyoti Gogoi. In Khowang, she continued her attack on the state government, criticising Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and reiterating the party’s commitment to women’s empowerment and restoring Assam’s cultural pride.

The day-long campaign in the tea garden and rural belts of Upper Assam is seen as a direct counter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on the same day, especially his outreach to tea garden workers in Dibrugarh.
Priyanka’s rallies focused heavily on local issues affecting tea tribes, women, and indigenous communities — key voter groups in the region. This visit marks Priyanka Gandhi’s significant push in Assam, where she also serves as Chairperson of the Congress Screening Committee for candidate selection.
The Congress is aiming to consolidate opposition votes and challenge the BJP’s “double-engine” government narrative.
