Priyanka Gandhi Releases Charge Sheet Against Assam Govt

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi unveiled a 20-point “people’s charge sheet” against the BJP-led Assam government, alleging corruption and governance failures ahead of upcoming elections.

GUWAHATI-  Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday released a 20-point chargesheet against the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government, detailing a series of allegations and grievances raised by the opposition ahead of the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections.

According to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), the chargesheet compiles concerns collected from across the state through consultations with grassroots organisations, indigenous groups, business communities, intellectuals and other stakeholders.

The chargesheet accused the government of failing to implement key commitments, including granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities and addressing concerns related to the Assam Accord and Clause 6. It also raised issues related to alleged financial mismanagement, repeated borrowings flagged by the Comptroller and Auditor General, and claims of irregularities connected to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process.

Addressing the gathering, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said the move reflected the party’s seriousness about the upcoming electoral contest, noting that Priyanka Gandhi had accepted the responsibility of leading the Screening Committee after understanding the sentiments of the people of Assam.

Party leaders described the charge sheet as part of a broader strategy to highlight what they termed “rampant corruption” and administrative shortcomings during the BJP’s tenure. The Congress also accused the government of misgovernance and economic irregularities, while emphasising the need for accountability and transparency.

The BJP has consistently rejected similar allegations in the past, describing them as politically motivated attacks aimed at influencing public opinion during election season.

Additional allegations mentioned in the document included inadequate job creation, environmental concerns linked to mining activities, claims of suppression of dissent and media freedom, and criticism of governance in sectors such as healthcare, education, urban planning and disaster management.

Political observers note that the release of the dossier signals an escalation in campaign rhetoric as both parties gear up for a competitive electoral contest in Assam.

Priyanka Gandhi, who is also overseeing aspects of the Congress’s election preparations in the state, framed the document as a platform to present the opposition’s narrative on governance and policy outcomes. Analysts say the move reflects the Congress’s attempt to consolidate its support base by focusing on issues such as corruption, economic challenges and social welfare.
