Sikkim: Landslide in Sokpey Village, 20 families evacuated
Tourists are stuck in North Sikkim due to incessant snowfall. Around 1,400 tourists have already been rescued by the army.
GANGTOK- A landslide occurred in the early hours of Sunday at Sikkim’s Sokpe village in Gangtok, causing heavy damage to the national highway along the Dikchu-Rakdong road. Officials said the landslide occurred around 7 a.m. near Dikchu-Rakdong road adjacent to Sokpe village, damaging two houses and affecting at least 20 families.
A landslide occurred in East Sikkim district on Sunday morning. The officers said that “ The landslide occurred around 7 a.m. near Dikchu-Rakdong road adjacent to Sokpe village, damaging two houses and affecting at least 20 families”.

Though no casualty was reported in the incident, several public properties were damaged and cattle were affected due to the landslide. Landslides have also damaged standing crops in the fields.
After the incident, 20 affected families were shifted to safer places and the damage caused in the village is being assessed, officials said.
Let us inform that there was unprecedented snowfall in North Sikkim on March 11-15. Since then, there has been intermittent snowfall in various parts of North Sikkim. It is snowing as often as the traffic roads have been cleared. Now the road is not passable due to extreme drop in temperature. Tourists get stuck during the journey.

According to army sources, the soldiers have rescued 1400 tourists till Saturday. He has been given first aid. This rescue work has been done at an altitude of about 14 to 18 thousand feet.
Apart from this, snow clearance work has started to facilitate the movement of people and army in North Sikkim. A joint initiative of Trishakti Shapers and BRO, the snow clearance work is done using advanced technology.
But there has been news of snowfall again in many places on Sunday. However, there is no news of any casualty so far.
