Sikkim: NH-10 Faces Temporary Closure from Coronation Bridge to Chitrey for Safety Works

The closure, effective from 8 PM on August 3, 2025, to 6 PM on August 6, 2025, is due to critical safety concerns necessitating urgent maintenance work.

GANGTOK- The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) has announced a temporary suspension of vehicular movement on a key stretch of National Highway 10 (NH-10) from Coronation Bridge to Chitrey (Km 0.0 to Km 30.0).

The closure, effective from 8 PM on August 3, 2025, to 6 PM on August 6, 2025, is due to critical safety concerns necessitating urgent maintenance work.

This stretch, a vital link connecting Siliguri to Kalimpong and Sikkim, has been plagued by recurring landslides, rockfalls, and riverbank erosion along the Teesta River, particularly during the monsoon season.

According to NHIDCL, the closure is mandated under the Control of National Highway (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, to ensure public safety and facilitate essential repairs. The district administration will implement alternate traffic arrangements to minimize disruptions, though travelers are advised to plan their journeys using alternative routes to avoid delays.

Local authorities have emphasized the importance of these measures to prevent accidents and ensure the long-term stability of the highway. This is not the first instance of NH-10 closures in recent months. On July 19, 2025, a landslip and rockfall at Birik Dara in Kalimpong district prompted a temporary shutdown, with clearance work completed within 24 hours.

Similarly, intermittent closures occurred between May 9-15, 2025, for maintenance on the Sevoke-Rangpo stretch. These recurring disruptions highlight the challenges of maintaining NH-10, a critical artery for the region’s connectivity, amid challenging terrain and weather conditions.

Travelers are urged to stay updated through official NHIDCL announcements or local news outlets for real-time information on road conditions and reopening schedules.

The NHIDCL has assured that all efforts are being made to complete the safety works within the stipulated timeframe to restore normal traffic flow.
