Tripura Hit by 24-Hour Statewide Bandh Over ILP Demands
A 24-hour statewide bandh in Tripura, led by TIPRA Motha, demanded full implementation of the Inner Line Permit system and the Tiprasa Tribal autonomy accord.

AGARTALA- Tripura was rocked by a 24-hour statewide bandh today, organized by the Tripura Civil Society (TCS) under TIPRA Motha legislator Ranjit Debbarma, calling for full implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and the Tiprasa Tribal autonomy accord.
The protest, commencing early morning, saw picketing, highway blockades, and tire burning at over 45 to 61 locations, significantly affecting vehicular movement and market operations in tribal-dominated areas. Shops largely remained closed, and public transport was disrupted.

The bandh is driven by demands to protect indigenous rights by addressing illegal migration, enforcing the ILP system, and implementing provisions of the Tiprasa Accord, signed 18 months ago to grant greater tribal autonomy. Protesters also called for identification and deportation measures for illegal immigrants and the creation of detention centers.
The Tripura government ordered all public servants to report for duty, ensuring essential services continued. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha condemned the bandh as a politically motivated effort to disrupt peace and development.

Tensions between BJP cadres and TIPRA Motha supporters were visible, but security forces maintained a strong presence, and the strike ended by evening without major violence. TIPRA Motha leaders reiterated their commitment to peaceful protest while warning of potential escalation if demands remain unmet.
The bandh has intensified debates on Tripura’s demographic challenges, tribal rights, and political autonomy, with citizens awaiting the government’s response and prospects for constructive dialogue.
