Tripura: Protest in Agartala Against Alleged Anti-India Remarks by Bangladeshi Leader

Youth Tipra Federation activists protested outside the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala over remarks seen as threatening India’s northeastern states.

AGARTALA–  Hundreds of activists from the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) – a key ally of the ruling BJP in Tripura – staged a vociferous protest outside the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission office in Agartala on Friday.

The demonstration was in response to recent statements by Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP), perceived as threatening to isolate India’s northeastern “Seven Sisters” states.

Protesters gathered near the diplomatic mission from morning, raising slogans against Abdullah and Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.

They accused Bangladeshi leaders of fomenting an “anti-India campaign” amid ongoing unrest in the neighboring country following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi.

YTF President Suraj Debbarma addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the protest reflected public sentiment rather than political motives.

“We want to remind anti-India forces in Bangladesh that it was India that liberated Bangladesh from Pakistani oppression in just 13 days during the 1971 Liberation War,” Debbarma said.

He warned against any attempts to destabilize the Northeast, stating, “If Bangladesh threatens to disintegrate northeastern India, we are ready to respond accordingly.”

The protesters highlighted Abdullah’s remarks made during a rally on December 15, where he allegedly warned that destabilizing Bangladesh could lead to the isolation of India’s northeastern states via the Siliguri Corridor, known as the “Chicken’s Neck.”

TMP supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma praised the protest on social media, noting that his party was the only one in the Northeast to publicly demonstrate against such statements.

Security was promptly heightened around the Assistant High Commission, with personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed to maintain order. No incidents of violence or breach were reported, unlike a similar security lapse at the mission last year.

The protest comes against the backdrop of escalating bilateral tensions, with anti-India demonstrations in Bangladesh targeting Indian diplomatic premises over allegations linked to Hadi’s assassination. Indian authorities have expressed concern over provocative rhetoric from certain elements in Dhaka.

Local authorities described the demonstration as peaceful, dispersing after several hours without escalation. The event underscores growing sensitivities in India’s border states regarding cross-border statements amid Bangladesh’s political turmoil.
