Tripura: Clashes between BJP and IPFT before Panchayat Poll

Clashes involving BJP and IPFT supporters was reported from Tripura over the filing of nomination papers for Panchayat by-elections.

Clashes involving BJP and IPFT workers and supporters was reported from Gournagar block area over the filing of nomination papers for upcoming Panchayat by-elections on September 30.

At least 50 people, including four policemen, were injured in clashes among cadres of political parties in Tripura over the past two days. Workers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed with members of its ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) and the opposition Congress over submission of nomination papers, for by elections to the three-tier panchayat in the state.

The BJP and IPFT have decided to contest the by elections separately, fuelling speculations about fissures within the fledgling coalition.

By elections to 3,207 gram panchayat seats, 161 panchayat samitis and 18 zilla parishads will take place as the seats fell vacant after large-scale resignations by elected public representatives since the BJP-IPFT government came to power.

The  opposition Congress and CPI (M) have demanded that the civic by polls should be deferred and the time to file nominations extended.

Meanwhile the National Federation for New States (NFNS) strongly condemns the dastardly attack on IPFT cadres in Boxanagar, Tipura and  demanded that The Chief Minister & Home Minister Of The State Of Tripura must take up this issue with all seriousness and not only publicly condemn it but also initiate strictest action against the perpetrators.
