Tripura Storms: 1,534 Houses Hit, IMD Issues Alert

Severe storms damage 1,534 houses, disrupt power and roads across Tripura; IMD warns of more heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

AGARTALA- Widespread storms accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms have caused significant damage across Tripura over the past two days, affecting more than 1,500 houses and disrupting infrastructure in multiple districts, officials said on Tuesday.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, at least 1,534 houses have been damaged, while two persons sustained injuries. No fatalities have been reported so far. The storms also damaged 129 electric poles and led to road blockages due to fallen trees, affecting power supply and connectivity in several areas.

Among the worst-affected regions, Unakoti district reported 518 damaged houses in Kailashahar subdivision, including 26 that were completely destroyed. In North Tripura, 136 houses were damaged in Dharmanagar.

In Dhalai district, Ambassa recorded 23 damaged houses, while Kamalpur and Gandatwisa reported 97 houses each. Longtharai Valley subdivision saw 55 houses affected, including 20 fully destroyed.

Sepahijala district reported widespread damage, with 61 houses affected in Bishalgarh, 91 in Sonamura, and 98 in Jampuijala. Road clearance operations were ongoing in several areas. In West Tripura’s Sadar subdivision, 28 road blockages were reported and later cleared, while Mohanpur recorded 37 damaged houses.

Khowai district reported 41 damaged houses in Teliamura and 44 in Khowai subdivision. In Gomati district, multiple road blockages were reported, and two persons were injured in Kakraban. Power infrastructure also suffered damage.

In South Tripura, 59 houses were partially damaged in Sabroom and 177 in Belonia, including 27 that were fully destroyed.

Officials said damage assessment is ongoing and financial assistance has already been initiated in some areas. River levels remained below danger marks, although the Juri river was reported slightly above expected levels.

Chief Minister Manik Saha said the government is taking necessary measures and assured that assistance would be provided to affected residents.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning, forecasting moderate to severe thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, wind speeds of 60–80 kmph are likely in parts of Khowai and West districts, while other areas may experience winds of 50–60 kmph along with widespread rainfall. Rainfall between 7 cm and 20 cm is expected in districts including Khowai, West, North, Unakoti, and Dhalai.

In the past 24 hours, Dhalai recorded the highest rainfall at 159 mm in Kamalpur, while wind speeds reached up to 111 kmph in Chhailengta. Several districts reported heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The IMD has warned that the ongoing weather conditions could lead to poor visibility, waterlogging, flash floods in low-lying areas, landslides in vulnerable locations, and damage to infrastructure, crops, and communication lines.

Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from open fields and electrical conductors. Farmers have been urged to suspend field activities during lightning events and take measures to protect crops.
