Mizoram: CM Lalduhoma Orders CBI Probe on Lengpui Deal

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announces CBI inquiry into controversial Lengpui land deal for IAF base amid fierce opposition criticism in assembly.

AIZAWL-  Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the controversial land deal near Lengpui airport for an Indian Air Force (IAF) base, following a heated assembly debate on February 18, 2026.

The announcement came during discussions on the Governor’s address, where opposition parties Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress demanded accountability over alleged irregularities in the ₹187.9-188 crore transaction.

Lalduhoma accused the previous MNF government of finalizing key formalities, including land rate fixation, for an outright sale before his Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) administration took over, leaving only fund transfer pending.

The current government opted to convert the deal to a lease, issuing preliminary and final notifications after an internal inquiry revealed procedural flaws.

Revenue Minister B Lalchhanzova defended the shift, noting the land was meant for strategic use, while rejecting claims of bypassing mandatory Social Impact Assessments.

Opposition leader Lalchhandama Ralte questioned why the ZPM proceeded if aware of issues, alleging possible commissions, and MNF’s Lalthangliana highlighted Lalduhoma’s prior criticisms of the process.

Lalduhoma countered that MNF issued 120 No Objection Certificates during its tenure to exempt assessments for defence-linked projects.

This development follows MNF’s February 6 demand for a CBI probe, citing unlawful executive control and violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Mizoram’s general CBI consent, restored by Lalduhoma in December 2023, enables seamless investigations. The episode underscores ongoing tensions over land governance in Northeast India, balancing strategic needs against transparency concerns.
