The celebration marked 15 years of the institute’s formal journey in music education, recognising its efforts to nurture young musicians and promote Assamese musical heritage. The evening featured a ceremonial cake-cutting, while noted novelist and writer Munmi Mahanta anchored the programme.

From Four Students to More Than 250

The story of Piano Kids began with a vision in 2008, before the institution was formally launched on October 10, 2011. Its primary objective was to introduce children to music, develop their musical abilities and provide opportunities for further learning.

What started as a modest academy with four students has grown into an institution with more than 250 enrolled students. According to the institute, over 400 students have completed their music education there, while more than 45 are pursuing advanced-level studies.

The institute follows John Thompson’s school syllabus, which it says is approved by Trinity College of Music, with staff notation serving as the medium of instruction.

Preserving Assamese Music Through Staff Notation

An important aspect of Piano Kids’ work is its effort to document and teach traditional Assamese music using Western staff notation, a system of musical writing that can help record compositions for teaching and future reference.

Its curriculum includes a wide range of Assamese and regional musical traditions, including Borgeet, Bihu songs, Biya Naam, Holi songs, Jhumur songs, lullabies, Bhupendra Sangeet, Bishnu Sangeet, Jyoti Sangeet, Parvati Sangeet and Zubeen Sangeet.

Through these efforts, the institute aims to make traditional compositions accessible to younger learners while encouraging formal music education.

Students Perform on Prestigious Stages

Over the years, Piano Kids has organised nine major events in Guwahati. Hundreds of students trained in staff notation have performed musical arrangements and symphonies at prominent venues, including the ITA Centre in Machkhowa, Rabindra Bhawan, the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium at Kalakshetra and Shilpagram.

Traditional Assamese folk songs have featured prominently in these performances, reflecting the institute’s emphasis on combining musical training with cultural preservation.

The institute’s stated mission includes popularising piano education, nurturing young talent and documenting indigenous Assamese melodies for future generations.

Honouring the Founder’s Vision

The 15th anniversary celebration also recognised the contribution of founder and mentor Kushal Krishna Dev Goswami, whose vision has guided the institution’s development.

As Piano Kids enters its next phase, its work highlights the role that music education institutions can play in developing young performers while creating opportunities to preserve and pass on regional musical traditions.

The anniversary marked not only a milestone in the institute’s growth but also a renewed focus on connecting formal music education with Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
