Mizoram Marks 39th Statehood Day

Mizoram celebrated its 39th Statehood Day on February 20, 2026, with flag hoisting, parades, and cultural events in Aizawl, as leaders emphasized peace, progress, and heritage.

AIZAWL- Mizoram observed its 39th Statehood Day on February 20, 2026, commemorating the 1987 elevation to full statehood as India’s 23rd state following the Mizoram Peace Accord.

State capital Aizawl hosted central celebrations at Assam Rifles Ground, featuring Chief Minister Lalduhoma unfurling the national flag, inspecting a guard of honour, and reviewing parades by police, paramilitary forces, NCC, NSS cadets, and Assam Rifles.

Tributes were paid to freedom fighters, with awards for excellence in various fields, alongside student cultural performances and an annual Independence Football Tournament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings, praising Mizoram’s natural beauty, community spirit, and cultural harmony, while expressing hopes for continued peace and prosperity.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed wishes for progress and cultural preservation.

Governor (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh stressed Mizoram’s strategic border position with Myanmar and Bangladesh, its role in India’s Act East Policy, and advancements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and sustainable development amid its reputation for peace and cleanliness.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma thanked the Centre, reaffirming commitment to growth and national contributions via social media.

Celebrations across government offices, schools, and communities reflected on the Mizo National Front’s insurgency resolution through the 1986 Accord, fostering unity and pride in the state’s journey from Union Territory status in 1972. The events balanced historical reflection with forward-looking optimism on governance and heritage preservation.
