Manipur: Violence Erupts in Churachandpur After Accident
A minor road accident involving a security forces vehicle escalated into violence in Manipur’s Churachandpur, leading to arson and detentions.

CHURACHANDPUR- Tension flared in the Tuibong area of Churachandpur district on the evening of March 25, 2026, after a minor road accident between a two-wheeler and a security forces vehicle quickly escalated into violence, resulting in a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicle being set ablaze.
According to officials and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around 6:30 pm when a security forces vehicle (reported variously as an Army Casspir mine-protected vehicle or similar) collided with a two-wheeler in the busy Tuibong area.
Two civilians riding the two-wheeler sustained minor injuries and were rushed to the Churachandpur District Hospital for treatment. Locals alleged that the security vehicle did not stop immediately after the collision, sparking anger among residents.

A large mob soon gathered at the spot, leading to stone pelting and confrontation with security personnel. In the ensuing chaos, miscreants vandalised and set fire to a Tata Winger vehicle belonging to the Rapid Action Force (RAF) wing of the CRPF at around 7:30 pm. Visuals from the spot showed the vehicle engulfed in flames.
Minor injuries were reported on both sides, affecting civilians as well as security personnel. Sounds of gunshots were also heard in the area during the unrest, though no major casualties have been confirmed.

Security forces responded promptly by deploying additional personnel and using tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The situation was brought under control within a short time, with normalcy restored in the area. Authorities have detained around 20 suspects in connection with the violence and vandalism.
The Indian Army and police have described the escalation as being instigated by “certain elements” attempting to create unrest. Prompt medical assistance was provided to the injured civilians, who were later discharged.

Churachandpur, which has witnessed intermittent tensions in recent years, remained tense following the incident, though no further violence was reported overnight. Heavy security deployment continues in the sensitive Tuibong Bazar area to prevent any fresh flare-up.
Senior officials are monitoring the situation closely. Further investigation into the road accident and the subsequent violence is underway.
This incident highlights the fragile law-and-order situation in parts of Manipur, where minor events can rapidly escalate due to underlying sensitivities.
