Meghalaya: 16 Arrested in Shillong Prostitution Crackdown

Coordinated raids across key Shillong locations led to 16 arrests as police probe a suspected prostitution network.

SHILLONG- The East Khasi Hills District Police have arrested 16 individuals over a span of 48 hours in connection with an alleged prostitution racket operating across multiple locations in Shillong, officials said.

The coordinated operation, which began on the evening of March 28, targeted areas including Khyndai Lad (Police Bazar),  near MBOSE office in Lachumiere, and IGP Point—locations identified by authorities as hotspots for alleged “immoral activities.”

According to police officials, those apprehended include four individuals suspected of acting as agents facilitating the operation, along with 12 others allegedly involved in solicitation or related activities. Law enforcement personnel also seized one car and two scooters, believed to have been used to transport individuals between transit points and hotels.

The crackdown follows a series of complaints from local residents and community groups, including religious institutions, who had raised concerns about visible solicitation in public areas, particularly near places of worship and educational institutions.

Authorities have also linked the intensified enforcement to public health concerns. State health officials had recently indicated a rise in HIV/AIDS cases in the district, prompting closer monitoring of areas considered vulnerable to unregulated commercial sexual activity.

Police officials confirmed that all detainees have been booked under relevant provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA) and the Meghalaya Police Act. Most of those arrested were produced before a local court on Sunday.

A senior police officer stated that interrogation of the suspected agents is ongoing to determine whether the activities are part of a larger organised network operating beyond Shillong.

Officials have indicated that similar operations are likely to continue in the coming weeks, with a focus on guest houses and private accommodations suspected of facilitating such activities.

The development reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in the region to address both public order concerns and associated health risks, while also navigating the legal framework governing such offences.
