Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar Found Dead at Police Headquarters
The Tripura Director General of Police was found unconscious inside the bathroom of his office chamber and was declared dead at GB Pant Hospital. The exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem examination.
AGARTALA- Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead under unexplained circumstances on Monday after he was discovered unconscious inside the bathroom of his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala.
According to officials, Dhankar was immediately rushed to GB Pant Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him through prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, he could not be revived.
Confirming the death, senior physician Dr Pradip Bhowmik said the DGP was brought to the emergency department in an unresponsive condition.

“On arrival, there was no pulse or blood pressure. We immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation and continued all resuscitative measures for about 48 minutes. Despite our best efforts, there was no response, and he was declared dead at 12:48 pm,” Dr Bhowmik said.
The doctor said the exact cause of death would be determined only after the post-mortem examination.
“It was almost like a brought-dead case. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the exact cause of death will be known only after the examination,” he added.

Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances leading to Dhankar’s death. While speculation has surfaced on social media regarding the incident, Tripura Police and the state government have not confirmed or commented on the cause of death.
Following the incident, the body was shifted to the hospital mortuary. Family members, including the DGP’s son, are expected to arrive in Agartala.
Senior state officials, including Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, and West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, visited the hospital soon after the incident. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha also reached the hospital to review the situation.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also visited the hospital following the news of Dhankar’s death.
As questions emerged over the incident, Choudhury demanded a judicial inquiry under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.
“He was among the most sincere and upright officers in the Tripura Police. This is an extraordinary incident. If it is found to be a case of suicide, the circumstances that led to such an extreme step must be thoroughly investigated. We demand a judicial probe under a sitting High Court judge,” Choudhury said.
A senior IPS officer, Dhankar was serving as the head of the Tripura Police at the time of his death. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and authorities are awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination.
