Arms, Ammunition Recovered in Manipur Raids

Security forces recovered firearms, explosives, and documents in separate operations in Imphal West and Thoubal districts amid ongoing tensions.

IMPHAL- Security forces conducted coordinated operations in Manipur on March 20, recovering a cache of arms, ammunition, and related materials from two separate locations in Imphal West and Thoubal districts.

In the first operation, carried out in the Phayeng Mamang Leikai area under Lamsang Police Station in Imphal West district, security personnel recovered one .32 calibre pistol with a magazine. In addition, four stun shells and eight tear smoke shells were seized. Authorities also recovered several documents, including three diaries, three register books, and an exercise book, which are expected to aid further investigation.

In a separate operation on the same day, security forces recovered a larger cache of weapons from the foothills of Haokhong Ching under Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in Thoubal district. The items seized included two .32 pistols with magazines, five bore action single-barrel rifles, and four high-explosive (HE) mortars.

Officials indicated that the recoveries are part of ongoing search and area domination operations being conducted in vulnerable and fringe areas of the state. Such operations have been intensified in recent months amid continuing concerns over the proliferation of illegal arms and sporadic incidents of violence in Manipur.

The recovery of mortars and multiple firearms in Thoubal district points to the presence of more sophisticated weaponry in circulation, raising concerns about potential escalation if such arms are not intercepted.

While no arrests have been reported in connection with the recoveries so far, authorities stated that investigations are underway to identify those responsible for stockpiling and possessing the weapons. The documents recovered in Imphal West are expected to provide leads regarding networks or individuals involved.

Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to continuing search operations to recover illegal arms and maintain law and order. The latest seizures come against the backdrop of ongoing ethnic tensions and security challenges in the state, where periodic incidents of violence have necessitated heightened vigilance.

Officials have urged residents to cooperate with security forces and report any suspicious activities as part of efforts to stabilise the situation.
