Assam: Assamese Designer Sanjukta Dutta Creates Handwoven Angavastra Featuring PM Modi’s Portrait

GUWAHATI- Renowned Assamese fashion designer Sanjukta Dutta has once again brought pride to Assam by crafting a unique handwoven angavastra featuring a portrait of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The exquisite creation, made from traditional Pat silk, was unveiled on National Handloom Day, August 7, 2025, as a tribute to the Prime Minister and a celebration of Assam’s rich weaving heritage.

Dutta, celebrated for her efforts in reviving and globalizing the traditional Assamese Mekhela Chador, showcased her artistry through this meticulously handwoven angavastra.

The piece, which took weeks to complete, blends intricate craftsmanship with cultural significance, embodying the essence of Assam’s indigenous weaving traditions.

The portrait of PM Modi, woven into the fabric, symbolizes respect and admiration for his leadership, as highlighted by Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who praised Dutta’s work on social media, noting its contribution to promoting the state’s handloom legacy.

Taking to X, Dutta expressed her pride in honoring the Prime Minister through her craft, stating, “This angavastra is a testament to the skill of our weavers and the beauty of Assam’s handwoven traditions. It’s an honor to create something that reflects both our heritage and our respect for PM Modi.”

The designer’s work has garnered widespread appreciation online, with posts on X lauding her for putting Assam’s handloom on the global map.

Sanjukta Dutta, hailing from Nagaon, Assam, is no stranger to accolades. Her designs have graced prestigious platforms like Lakme Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, and the Cannes Film Festival.

She was the first Assamese woman to showcase her collection at Lakme Fashion Week and has styled Bollywood icons such as Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, and Tabu.

In 2018, she received the Dada Saheb Phalke Excellence Award for Best Fashion Designer, and her designs, including an angavastra gifted to the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2016, have consistently highlighted Assam’s silk industry.

The creation of the PM Modi-inspired angavastra underscores Dutta’s commitment to preserving and promoting Assam’s handloom heritage. By incorporating traditional motifs with modern aesthetics, Dutta continues to elevate Assamese craftsmanship on both national and international stages.

The angavastra has sparked conversations about the importance of supporting indigenous weavers, especially women, who play a vital role in Assam’s handloom sector.

As National Handloom Day celebrations continue, Dutta’s latest creation serves as a powerful reminder of the artistry and resilience of Assam’s weavers, cementing her legacy as a pioneer in blending tradition with innovation.
