Assam Elections: Kunki Chowdhury at Center of Storm Amid Rising Election Fever
unki Chowdhury, AJP candidate for Guwahati Central, faces controversy amid Assam election 2026, with BJP leaders questioning her stance over social media allegations.

GUWAHATI- As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections approach, the political temperature in the state has reached a boiling point. At the heart of this intensifying election fever is 26-year-old Kunki Chowdhury, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate for Guwahati Central.
Chowdhury, a UCL graduate and the youngest face in the race, initially gained significant momentum by focusing her campaign on urban infrastructure, youth employment, and modernising Guwahati’s drainage systems. However, this policy-driven momentum was recently disrupted by a massive political firestorm.
The controversy erupted when senior BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, targeted Chowdhury over alleged social media posts made by her mother. The allegations linked her family to controversial remarks regarding food habits and support for polarizing activists. The BJP used these claims to question Chowdhury’s ideological stance, turning a local constituency battle into a high-stakes debate over cultural values.
Chowdhury has hit back, labeling the attacks “baseless and scripted” attempts to derail a young woman’s entry into politics. She maintained that the focus on her personal life is a distraction from the real issues facing the citizens of Guwahati.
Following the outbreak of this controversy, the election fever has only heightened. What began as a contest over civic amenities has now transformed into a high-octane ideological battle, with both the ruling party and the opposition intensifying their grassroots mobilization as the state moves closer to the polls.

Allegations: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders targeted her over alleged social media posts by her mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, involving beef consumption and support for activists like Sharjeel Imam.
Response: Chowdhury has dismissed these claims as “entirely baseless” and politically motivated, asserting that the BJP is resorting to personal attacks because of her growing public support.
Her mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, also publicly asked the Chief Minister to fact-check his charges. The AJP framed the remarks as an attack on women’s dignity and a sign of desperation in the ruling party’s campaign.
Congress leader defends
Congress also joined the fray through its Assam in-charge, Jitendra Singh Alwa. The senior Congress leader, who serves as All India Congress Committee General Secretary and is in charge of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, posted a strong defence of Sujata Gurung Chowdhury and her daughter on X.
He described Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks as “baseless and disrespectful” and accused him of insulting Assam’s youth and its Gen-Z generation by targeting the youngest candidate in the ongoing Assembly elections. He further linked the controversy to a pattern of alleged attacks on Congress candidates in constituencies such as Katigorah and Jalukbari.
