GUWAHATI-The city of Guwahati experienced severe waterlogging today following overnight torrential rains, leading to widespread disruption of daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam until May 23.

Low-lying areas such as Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Rukminigaon, Hatigaon, PIBCO Point, Juripar, Silsako, Basisthapur-Survey, Beltola, Maligaon, and Chandmari were inundated, with water levels reaching knee height in some localities. The flooding led to the closure of several schools and caused significant traffic congestion, with many vehicles stranded on submerged roads.
Emergency response teams have been placed on high alert, and city officials are closely monitoring the evolving situation. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during peak rainfall hours.

Assam’s Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, Jayanta Malla Baruah, surveyed some of the affected areas and acknowledged the challenges posed by the influx of rainwater from the adjoining hills in Meghalaya. He emphasized the need for improved stormwater drainage systems and pumps to manage the voluminous flow of water.
The IMD has forecasted that both western and southern Assam are likely to experience even heavier rainfall in the coming days, with isolated locations potentially recording up to 200 mm. Residents in vulnerable areas, including low-lying neighborhoods and slopes prone to erosion, have been urged to stay alert for signs of flooding or landslides.
Precautions and Recommendations:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
- Stay updated with official weather advisories.
- Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare for possible evacuations.
- Ensure that emergency kits are ready and accessible.
As Guwahati braces for continued inclement weather, authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency services to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
